About CostToRun

Clear estimates, visible assumptions

CostToRun helps people translate appliance power into a practical electricity-cost estimate using the rate on their own bill. We publish free calculators and guides so households can compare running costs without signing up or sharing personal data.

What we publish

Each page includes a working calculator, a direct answer near the top, the formula used, realistic example assumptions, factors that change real consumption, and practical saving tips. We do not publish thin keyword pages that only swap appliance names.

Our formula

Cost = (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours used × electricity price per kWh. Weekly figures use the selected days per week. Monthly figures use 52 weeks divided by 12 months. Yearly figures use weekly kWh multiplied by 52.

Where example values come from

Preset wattages are illustrative values within common product ranges. They are not claims about every model and are never a substitute for a rating label, energy label, manufacturer specification, or plug-in power meter. When a page mentions duty cycles, thermostat behaviour, or energy-label interpretation, that guidance is specific to the appliance type.

How we review pages

Calculator logic is checked before deployment. Example assumptions are reviewed when presets change. Pages are updated when formulas, defaults, or important tariff guidance changes. The visible updated date on each guide reflects the last meaningful review.

Editorial standard

Who runs CostToRun

CostToRun is an independent calculator site focused on household electricity estimates. It is published at runningcostcalculator.com. For corrections, measured examples, or appliance suggestions, use the contact page.

Important limitation

Results are educational estimates, not financial, engineering, or safety advice. Taxes, tiered tariffs, time-of-use prices, fixed charges, appliance condition, and duty cycles can change actual bills. Always use your own tariff and measured consumption when a decision depends on accuracy.

Advertising and privacy

We may display advertising in future to support the free calculators. Analytics, if enabled, is used only to understand which pages are useful. See the privacy policy for details.
